How to use Untape

Finding tips

There are many ways to browse the useful tips here on Untape. Here's a few pointers to help you find the tips you're looking for.

Searching
One of the fastest and easiest ways to find tips is to use our handy find a tip page. Simply click the magnifying glass icon along the top edge of the screen, beside the words 'find a tip'.

On the find a tip page, you'll find a search bar prompting you to enter some keywords. Clicking inside the search bar will let you type any search words you want, just as though you were using the popular yahoo! or google search tools you're probably used to.

For example, if you want to find untape tips related to schools, you might type 'school' into the search bar and press enter. After a few seconds you'll see all the tips that mention the word 'school' on the entire untape site. If you want to find something more specific, like tips about high school or school districts, refine your search by typing 'high school' or 'school district'.

If you're having trouble getting the right results, try refining your search by adding, removing, or changing some of your keywords. With any luck, you'll find what you're looking for.

Browsing
Another handy way to look for tips is to use the 'Explore Tips' block in the left sidebar. From this block, you can browse tips on the site by category, organization, date or topic. You can also find the tips that user like the most by browsing our Favorite tips.

Browsing by category will show you a list of broad categories used to classify tips on Untape, such as Care-giving or Fitness and Recreation. Clicking the title of any of these categories will show you a page with all of the tips filed in that category. This is a great way to research a particular topic of interest.
Browsing by organization will show you a list of organizations and agencies that relate to tips on Untape, such as Human Resources and Development Canada or the Ministry of Families and Children. Clicking the title of any of these organizations will show you a page with all of the tips related to that organization. This is a great way to find help with a particular agency or organization.
Browsing by date will take you to a page of the most recent posts on Untape. This is a good way to keep up with the latest happenings, or to find something new to you.
Browsing by topic is a lot like browsing by category. Clicking this link will show you a list of keywords used to classify tips on Untape. These keywords are less broad than the general categories, which makes them useful for finding information on a specific topic or issue such as advocacy or developmental disabilities. Clicking the title of any of these topics will show you a page with all of the tips filed with that keyword.
Browsing favorite tips shows you the best of Untape, as determined by our users. Tips show up in descending order, with the highest rated tips first on the list. This is a great way to find some of the best, most reliable, most useful content on Untape. If you've got some favorite tips, user the rating tool at the top of each post to give them a high rank, and maybe they'll show up here!

Adding tips

Do you have a tip for navigating the bureaucracy of a local community or government agency? Share it with on Untape by adding a tip! Here's how.

1. Login to Untape. If you don't have a user account, you can sign up - it's free and easy.

2. Once you're logged in, click the 'add a tip' button located along the top of any page (you'll know it by the cute little checkmark icon).

3. Follow these step-by-step instructions to add your tip:

Start by giving your tip a descriptive title, something like "Where to call if you have an ambulance bill" or "Where to find a playground that is accessible for children with special needs."
Next, in the area marked 'Tip', enter your tip. Use the buttons along the top of the field to format your text, just like you would in MS Word or other word processors. **A word of caution: copy/pasting text straight from a word document may cause some strange formatting problems. If you experience problems, try re-typing or pasting into a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit before copying your tip onto the site.
Once you've added your tip, choose one or more categories and, if applicable, organizations that relate to your tip. This will help users to find your tip more easily once it's been published. You can also add a few additional keywords that might apply to your tip in the 'topic' field. These keywords will offer yet another way for users to find your post.
Finally, if your tip came from an outside source, credit them in the 'source' field with a name, date, and either a link to their website or the name of their book, newspaper, or magazine.

4. When you're finished with the steps outlined above, click 'preview' to see what your tip will look like. If you have changes to make, go right ahead and make them. When you're thoroughly satisfied, click 'Submit'. Your tip is now online for the world to see. Woohoo!

Bookmarking tips

If you're a registered user here on Untape, you can create a personal list of your favorite tips right inside your user account. This list of bookmarks lets you easily access the tips you find most useful or insightful. Here's how it works.

Adding Bookmarks
1. Login to Untape. If you don't have a user account, you can sign up - it's free and easy.

2. Browse the site to find your favorite tips.

3. Underneath the title of a tip you like, find the link to 'add to my bookmarks'. Click this link to bookmark the tip. And that's it!

Viewing your bookmarks
1. Login to Untape.

2. Head to the 'my Untape' page. If you're not already there, click on the 'myUntape' button along the top of any page to reach it.

3. There are three sections of the myUntape page: 'my biography', 'my tips', and 'my bookmarks'. 'My bookmarks' will show up directly underneath the 'my tips' section as soon as you've added some bookmarks.

All your bookmarked tips will show up here, along with information about their author, recent replies/comments, date, and an option to remove the item from your bookmarks. To visit any of these bookmarked tips, simply click the title of the tip.

Removing bookmarks
There are two ways to remove a bookmark from your list:

Log in & visit the 'my Untape' page. Scroll down the page until you reach the 'My Bookmarks' section. Find the bookmark you want to remove, and click 'remove from my bookmarks'. Although the bookmark will not disappear immediately, the next time you visit the page it will be gone.
Log in & locate the tip you'd like to remove. Near the top of the tip, where the 'add to my bookmarks' link was previously, there's now a link called 'remove from my bookmarks'. Click this link to remove the tip from your bookmarks.
